THE IDEA

WHEN DOES A SPACE BCOME A PLACE?

A building can begin as bricks, stone and steel. It becomes a place through the memories, experiences and connections people attach to it.

SPACE → PLACE

PEOPLE GIVE
PLACES MEANING

Without people, a home is only a structure and a landmark is only material. Through living, meeting, travelling and remembering, spaces acquire meaning and become places.

RECOGNITION

WHAT REMAINS WHEN DETAIL IS REMOVED?

We do not need to see every window, street or architectural detail to recognise a place. A distinctive outline, map, shape or relationship between forms can be enough to bring the whole place—and our memories of it—to mind.

ABSTRACTION

REMOVING DETAIL CREATES ROOM FOR YOUR STORY

Abstraction is not about disguising a place. It removes the information tied to one particular viewpoint, leaving its essential structure open to recognition, memory and personal interpretation.

BETHNAL GREEN WORKING MEN'S CLUB

The streets around the club are simplified into routes, blocks and areas of colour. Names, literal scale and unnecessary information fall away. What remains is the structure that holds the venue within its neighbourhood—and leaves room for the experiences people associate with it.

METHOD

THE ARTIST STEPS BACK

Your connection to a place is not mine to define. I reduce visible brushwork and unnecessary detail so the artwork does not impose a single story. In my paintings, masking creates smooth surfaces and precise edges; in the editions, screenprinting produces the same flat, deliberate quality.

FLAT COLOUR

Colour is applied without expressive brushwork.

CLEAN EDGES

Masking and screenprinting create precise, controlled forms.

OPEN INTERPRETATION

The artwork identifies the place without prescribing what it should mean to you.

The place is yours. My role is to give it form.

VISUAL LANGUAGE

HOW A PLACE BECOMES AN ARTWORK

Maps, silhouettes, geometry and colour are used to reduce a place to the features through which we recognise it.

THE DETAILS CHANGE.

THE PLACE REMAINS RECOGNISABLE.
