So, you might be wondering, "Why does the artist RECOGNITION wear a mask?" Well, there are several reasons behind this unusual choice.
1. Focusing on the Art
We all carry biases that shape our perceptions, often unconsciously. By wearing a mask, I aim to shift the focus from my identity to my artwork. While I understand that people will inevitably form judgments about the mask itself, my hope is that it encourages viewers to engage with my art without the influence of preconceived notions.
2. Embracing Artistic Division
In the words of Pablo Picasso: "Great art divides."
Now I’m not claiming that my art is great, but I do hope you find it enjoyable. Criticism is a natural part of the creative process, and while I’ve developed a thick skin, the mask serves as a protective barrier. It allows me to engage with feedback—both constructive and negative—without taking it too personally.
3. Creating Boundaries
The mask also helps me establish a clear boundary between my personal and professional lives. Although I’m deeply immersed in art—whether I’m designing, preparing for a gallery, or brainstorming ideas—it's not my entire identity. When I don my art attire and mask, I enter what feels a bit like an "art mode." This helps me tap into my creativity; I’ve even been known to meditate while wearing it to tackle specific challenges!
.....However....
This all said, I don’t always wear the mask. I cherish the opportunity to build personal relationships with my clients. When discussing commissions, I want you to feel comfortable sharing your thoughts and feelings. My goal is to create artwork that resonates with you. Unless requested—since some individuals prefer anonymity—I usually leave the mask at home for these conversations.
